Sika Level 01 vs. 02 Primer: Choosing the Right Primer for Your Subfloor
Preparing a subfloor correctly is one of the most important steps in any flooring installation. Before hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl, or another finished flooring material goes down, the surface underneath needs to be properly prepared. When a self leveling or smoothing compound is required, choosing the right primer helps create the foundation for a successful installation.

Two common options for professional floor preparation are Sika Level 01 Primer Plus and Sika Level 02 EZ Primer. While both are designed for use with Sika Level products, they are intended for different types of substrates.
The main difference is simple: Sika Level 01 Primer Plus is primarily designed for porous, absorbent substrates, while Sika Level 02 EZ Primer is designed for difficult, smooth, nonporous substrates.
Understanding that distinction can help contractors choose the right floor primer before applying products such as Sika Level SkimCoat or Sika Level-325.
What Is Sika Level 01 Primer Plus?
Sika Level 01 Primer is a water based acrylic primer designed for porous and absorbent substrates. It is used to prime and seal floor surfaces before the application of compatible Sika Level products.
Common substrates include concrete, cement screeds, OSB, and plywood.
Porous surfaces can quickly absorb moisture from a cementitious underlayment. Sika Level 01 Primer Plus helps control that absorption while promoting adhesion between the substrate and the material installed over it. It also helps reduce outgassing and the formation of bubbles or pinholes in the underlayment.
For flooring contractors working over standard absorbent concrete or other approved porous substrates, Sika Level 01 Primer Plus is generally the appropriate choice before applying a compatible Sika floor leveling product.
What Is Sika Level 02 EZ Primer?
Sika Level 02 EZ Primer is an acrylic floor primer designed for more difficult, smooth, and nonporous substrates.
Instead of controlling the absorption of a porous surface, Sika Level 02 EZ Primer is intended to promote adhesion where the substrate does not readily absorb moisture. Examples can include properly prepared ceramic tile and certain existing water resistant adhesive residues.
This makes Sika Level 02 EZ Primer especially useful during renovation projects where the existing substrate is smooth or nonabsorbent and additional adhesion is needed before installing a compatible Sika Level product.
Sika Level 01 vs. 02 Primer: What's the Difference?

Using Sika Primers With Sika Level 325
For subfloors that need significant leveling before finished flooring can be installed, Sika Level-325 provides a cementitious self leveling underlayment designed to create a flatter, more uniform surface.
The primer used before Sika Level 325 depends on the substrate underneath it.
For standard absorbent substrates such as concrete and cement, Sika specifies Sika Level 01 Primer Plus. For approved nonabsorbent, smooth, and sound substrates, such as properly prepared ceramic tile or certain old water resistant adhesive residues, Sika specifies Sika Level 02 EZ Primer.
The primer is therefore not selected based on the finished hardwood or other flooring material. It is selected based on the substrate receiving the leveling compound.
Using Sika Primers With Sika Level SkimCoat
Not every floor needs a full self leveling application. Smaller imperfections, transitions, and localized uneven areas may instead call for Sika Level SkimCoat.
Sika Level SkimCoat is a fast setting, cement based smoothing and finishing compound designed to prepare floor surfaces before the installation of finished flooring.
As with Sika Level 325, the appropriate primer depends on the substrate. Standard absorbent concrete may call for Sika Level 01 Primer Plus when priming is needed, while nonabsorbent substrates may require Sika Level 02 EZ Primer.
Together, the appropriate Sika primer and floor preparation compound help create a properly prepared surface for the flooring system that follows.
Why Proper Subfloor Preparation Matters for Wood Flooring
A beautiful hardwood floor starts below the hardwood itself.
Uneven, improperly prepared, or incompatible substrates can create problems during installation and may affect the long term performance of the flooring system. Proper preparation helps create a flat and stable surface for the flooring installation while supporting the performance of adhesives, underlayments, and other components of the system.
That is why professional flooring installations often involve several steps before the first hardwood plank is installed.

Depending on the condition of the existing floor, preparation may include cleaning and mechanically preparing the substrate, repairing imperfections, priming the surface, applying a skim coat or self leveling underlayment, and allowing the preparation materials to cure according to manufacturer specifications before proceeding with the flooring installation.
Products such as Sika Level 01 Primer Plus, Sika Level 02 EZ Primer, Sika Level SkimCoat, and Sika Level 325 are designed to work as part of this floor preparation process.
Which Sika Floor Primer Does Your Project Need?
The easiest place to start is by identifying the substrate.

If you're working over a porous, absorbent surface, Sika Level 01 Primer Plus will typically be the appropriate option.
If you're working over an approved smooth, difficult, or nonporous surface, Sika Level 02 EZ Primer may be required instead.
The condition of the substrate also matters. Before applying either primer, the floor should be properly prepared and free from contaminants that could interfere with adhesion. Product specific requirements should always be verified before installation.
If moisture is a concern, primer alone may not solve the problem. Moisture conditions should be evaluated separately, and an appropriate moisture mitigation system may be required before proceeding with the flooring installation.
